Omonia players surround referee Neocleous after he failed to award Omonia a penalty kick

Omonia leapfrogged over Ael and Apollon and moved to the top of the table of the football championship with a 2-0 win over struggling Ethnikos Achnas.

Funnily enough the Nicosia team picked up the three points without one of their players finding the back of the net.

Both goals were scored by Ethnikos’ players, both ‘scored in a similar way with Omonia’s Jordi Gomes credited with both assists.

The culprits, Deyvison in the 14th minute and then Goga towards the end of the game, both slicing the ball past their hapless goalkeeper Bogadinov who could have saved both efforts if his defenders had allowed him to do so.

For yet another game the official in charge of the VAR, this time Loucas Sotiriou, one of the league’s ‘top’ referees failed to spot a blatant penalty in favour of Omonia when Peratikos bundled over Kiko in the penalty area with referee Neocleous waving play on despite having a clear view of the incident.

In the second game of the day Anorthosis overcame fellow Famagustans Nea Salamina by 2-0 thanks to a goal in each half.

Kvitalia opened the scored from the penalty spot shortly after the half hour while Galtisios scored the second with virtually the last kick of the game.

Anorthosis moved into third place, level on points with Apollon who have a game in hand, and one behind leaders Omonia.

VAR related complaints in this game as well with Anorthosis questioning why the referee did not even bother to check an incident when the ball seemed to have struck the arm of a Nea Salamina defender in the penalty area.

HIGHLIGHTS: Omonia 2 Ethnios 0
