Kypria Festival 2021: something to look forward to

Kypria 2

With all the cancelled events and online action there is one physical event that is promising us something to look forward to: Kypria International Festival 2021, scheduled to take place in September and October. Aiming to bring the festival back fully, its artistic director has issued an international open call for performing arts works.

Interested parties, artists and organisations from Cyprus and abroad have this week been invited to submit their performing arts proposals from the genres of theatre, dance, music, opera, musical performances for children, site-specific performances or any combination of the above, plus proposals for performances in non-conventional venues such as street theatre and town squares.

The aim is to provide the best possible festival programme, characterised by boldness, innovation and original structure but mainly by the quality and aesthetic completeness of its productions.

KypriaKypria International Festival aims to present a collection of new high-quality performing arts productions that display universal values and reflect social and political phenomena of our time through a timeless approach. Productions that are original and modern are also valued as well as ‘outside the box’ productions that operate in a controversial but also creative way.

Emphasis will also be given to innovative approaches. The open call for proposals encourages collaborations between Cypriot and foreign artists to foster new ideas and approaches in Cypriot creations.

The artistic director will prepare the final programme and evaluate all proposals. Artistic Director Andy Bargilly told the Cyprus Mail he hopes the festival’s 2021 edition will return to including international works as has been the intention for all years up to now. 2020’s festival mainly included Cypriot and Greek productions as the pandemic’s governmental measures and travel restrictions made it difficult to include international participation. This year, the festival aims to return to its international level.

The open call runs until February 12:
