Police warning over calls from unknown overseas numbers

Police on Monday issued a new warning against scam telephone calls from abroad.

They said they had been contacted by members of the public who had found missed calls from unknown numbers from overseas on their mobile phones.

Police said that in the past, this practice aimed at getting recipients to call back in which case, the call is charged at an exorbitant rate and the perpetrators then siphon off the money.

“It cannot be ruled out that the phone calls from foreign countries being made at present are malicious and aim to acquire money,” police said in a written statement.

They recommended people receiving such calls from unknown numbers to exercise particular care.

“In cases where a member of the public may have already returned the call after a missed call, they are urged to contact their telecommunication provider to check what charge has been made on their telephone bill and in the event that money has been taken, to file a complaint with the police station near where they live,” police added.
