Talking about intercommunal friendships

Wherever you live in the world, there is always a community considered ‘the other’. For centuries people have found reasons to unify and separate themselves, to form groups. Perhaps it’s done to form a sense of belonging, perhaps there is something deeper and slightly darker underneath this phenomenon.

Whatever the case, some people have always formed connections with the ‘other’ community. Intercommunal marriages and friendships are common and we do live in the 21^st century. An upcoming event looks at this locally and discusses bicommunal friendships in Cyprus.

Independent self-funded grassroots initiative Unite Cyprus Now will hold an online discussion on Friday on intercommunal friendships, if and how they existed in the past and how easy or difficult it is to have friends from other communities on the island.

The Zoom event is part of their Dialogue Groups project, where they bring different groups in Cyprus together. “If you have always wanted to meet people from other communities of Cyprus,” says Unite Cyprus Now, “this is your chance! Join us and find out how many similarities or differences we have. If you know people that haven’t had the chance to interact with people from other communities in Cyprus, share this event with them.”

The discussion will begin at 7pm this Friday with just a small number of places available. Those interested in joining the conversation are encouraged to register via a Google Doc found on the Facebook event (Online Discussion: Intercommunal Friendships).
