The Cyprus Football Association (CFA) has released a statement announcing the allocation of more than €2.5 million to support Cypriot football during the challenging times posed by the coronavirus pandemic.

The funds have been allocated to all football clubs across the entire Cypriot football landscape, including women’s football and futsal clubs.

The CFA has explained that the amount distributed is comprised of funds derived from its own coffers as well as funds provided by UEFA and FIFA to support football.

In terms of funds provided by the European and international football governing bodies, FIFA first announced its original COVID-19 Relief Plan, a wide-ranging programme aiming to assist football during these troubling times, back in the summer of the previous year.

As part of the plan, each member association will receive 1,000,000 dollars (844,195 euros at the time of writing) to safeguard and restart the sport in their respective country.

An additional 500,000 dollars (422,097 euros) will also be provided at a later stage. The second amount is earmarked specifically for women’s football.

“As the Cypriot Football Association, we consider that with this support plan in place, we have contributed to an important extent to the effort clubs are making to face the long-lasting challenges resulting from the pandemic,” the CFA press release stated.

“The financial capabilities of the association are not inexhaustible, however, we appreciate the unique and unprecedented conditions that we are all experiencing. The CFA did not hesitate to withdraw important amounts of money to support Cypriot football across all levels and across divisions,” the statement concluded.
