A whole year of events celebrating 200 years since the Greek Revolution

This March 25 marked 200 years since the Greek revolution of 1821 and to celebrate the Cultural Foundation of the Bank of Cyprus has organised a series of events which will last a whole year! Exhibitions, lectures, music, tours, educational programmes and more are on the agenda. An upcoming event to note is an exhibition highlighting an important figure of the 1821 revolution, writer Rigas Feraios.

The Map of Rigas Feraios opens on May 6 at the bank’s Cultural Foundation and features a large map depicting the Greek area and the wider area of the Balkan Peninsula south of the Danube. This is considered to be one of the most important works of the Modern Greek Enlightenment period, by Rigas Feraios and the most important sample of Greek cartography of the pre-revolutionary period. Apart from being on at the Foundation until the last day of 2021, a virtual exhibition has also been set up, which is already live, until December 2021.

Another exhibition will take place from April 15 to December 31, this one to be held outdoors on Ledras-Onasagorou Streets and Phaneromenis-Eleftheria Square. History has a Face is a photography exhibition portraying known and unknown faces of the Greek Revolution together with a revealing look at the National Assembly of 1843-1844. The exhibition will also take place at Limassol’s seafront from April 19 onwards. On March 30, the digital edition of the exhibition will launch at the Cultural Foundation lasting until the end of the year.

In September, a different kind of exhibition is coming, in collaboration with the Embassy of Greece and the Greek foreign ministry. In A Liberated Greece, the Diplomatic and Historical Archive Service of the ministry presents documents that describe the process of recognition of the new Greek state by the existing states during the struggle years and the first years after, the establishment of diplomatic and consular relations with them and the creation of a consular network. The exhibition will be hosted at the Cultural Foundation and online until January 2022.

Even more exhibitions will follow in 2022 and between February and March of next year, the exhibition 21 Otherwise still has the 1821 revolution at heart but presented in an alternative way to attract the youth. More than 20 small and large 3D scenes, made of Playmobil figures and accessories, will depict scenes from everyday life in Greece in the early 19th century, as well as events from the Greek Revolution. The exhibition will open on February 10, 2022, until March 31, both physically and virtually.

A series of lectures, presentations, tours and even a festival will follow throughout the year, each presenting different aspects of the historical 1821 events as well as the Greek and Cypriot culture.
