State health service (Okypy) officials held a meeting with representatives of the state nurses’ union Pasyno on Thursday do dissuade them from staging a two-day strike beginning at 7am on April 19 and ending at the same time on April 21 in protest at ongoing issues nurses face at state hospitals.

According to Okypy, the meeting was successful and nurses are expected to call off the strike after details of their complaints were discussed at length.

On Thursday morning, a statement released by Pasyno said that the decision to call the strike was taken after an online vote among its members.

The union also called on nurses to abstain from doing any overtime work for the time being and demanded a weekly rest day from all state hospitals’ administrations in Cyprus.

Finally, it warned that a lack of response from the state health service (Okypy) would eventually result in more serious actions in the future, which, for the time being, seem to have been avoided.
