Larnaca Municipality donates Easter packages to 90 needy families

A total of 90 needy families will receive Easter packages with food and other basic necessities from the municipality on Good Friday, Larnaca mayor Andreas Vyras announced on Thursday.

“The social grocery of the municipality, which has been operating for the last eight years, has provided many solutions and was the reason that several families, who were facing various survival problems, could spend the Easter and Christmas holidays, as well as other important days of the year, without missing essentials and basic goods,” he said.

Since 2013, when the financial crisis hit, hundreds of families have received the packages, and they have also been much needed since the coronavirus outbreak started, the mayor added.

Since the first lockdown many residents have been without work and without income, and the social grocery has helped more than 100 families.

“Until 2019 the social grocery served about 30 families, however in March 2020 this number almost quadrupled. However, even today, we see that there are fellow human beings who need help. Those who want support can visit the social grocery, fill in the necessary applications which indicate the specific criteria they must meet, and receive the necessary assistance.”

Once residents meet the criteria they are registered and can pick up a package from the social grocery every week.

Depending on the family, each package includes essentials such as diapers and milk for children in addition to food.
