Venus, Venice and Cyprus: Leventis Museum celebrates island’s ties with ‘La Serenissima’

In this video, the A. G. Leventis Gallery, supports the Leventis Municipal Museum’s programme of organised actions to celebrate the 1,600th anniversary of the founding of Venice.

The period of Venetian rule in Cyprus (1489-1570) – a time when Nicosia was the administrative centre of the island – is considered very important, as it shaped local social, economic and cultural life, and determined the European character of the island.

The video is a production by Alpha Square, based on the essay by Professor Peter Humfrey, which had been published in the catalogue of the temporary exhibition ‘The Venus Paradox’, held at the A. G. Leventis Gallery over September 2017 to January 2018. The video’s theme is the connections between Venice, Cyprus and the island’s patron love goddess, Venus.

The array of anniversary initiatives organised by the Leventis Municipal Museum aim both to inform, but also to invite the participation of Venice and Nicosia residents in the common history of the Republic of Venice and of Cyprus.
