New app locates can recycling banks

Charity Cans For Kids has announced the launch of a new app designed to make recycling metal waste in Cyprus easier by helping people locate can banks.

The charity raises money for donations to children’s wards in local hospitals by recycling aluminium cans collected from can banks across Cyprus. The app’s purpose is to help people locate – and get directions to – their nearest can bank.

“Although we have all our can bank locations marked on our website, we thought it would be easier for people, especially if they are in a different district than usual – perhaps at the coast or in the mountains – to be able to find their nearest drop-off point with just a couple of taps on their mobiles,” Cans For Kids president Rosie Charalambous said.

The most questions the charity receives on social media are about can bank locations, she said, explaining that the CansForKids app uses Google maps to identify the one nearest to the user and give them directions.

The app, which is currently only available for Android phones, was developed by a team of students at the University of Cyprus and is hosted on the university’s server.

It can be downloaded free of charge from the PlayStore or directly through the link: https://bit.ly/33fJnax
