Defence argues ex-bishop unfit to stand trial

Two witnesses for the defence team of former Kiti bishop Chrysostomos who has been accused of rape argued on Monday that he is suffering from dementia and is unfit to follow court proceedings.

Chrysostomos was released on €50,000 bail and handed in his travel documents back in April over a case which stems from a woman alleging she was raped.

He is also accused of the indecent assault of a woman that was allegedly committed in November 1981. At the time, the woman was underage.

According to daily Phileleftheros, Chrysostomos’ defence team called forth two experts, a neuroradiologist and a psychiatrist, who said that he is suffering from progressive dementia.

His team presented new and old X-rays at Larnaca court on Monday.

The prosecution requested that Tuesday’s proceedings be postponed until it has a chance to review the evidence which was submitted on Monday. The request was accepted and as such a date was set for June 30.
