When Debussy meets Ipirotiko

CVAR Severis Foundation is giving music lovers one more reason to visit old Nicosia next week as they host a special event on July 7. The Fusionia Quartet will hold a musical meeting of Debussy and Greek Ipirotiko music with two shows.

The Debussy String Quartet, from 1893, was a pivotal work – a turning point in classical music away from, and beyond, what came before. It is the only known string quartet French composer Claude Debussy ever composed. The string quartet was premiered by the Ysaÿe Quartet at the Société Nationale and July 7’s performance will present the Debussy Quartet in G Minor op.10.

Also part of the evening’s line-up is an original composition – an Ipirotiko suite. The suite is based on Greek influences mainly from the Epirus region and was initially composed for the Fusionia Duo for two violins in 2014 when the Duo was studying in Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. The idea for String Quartet was come up with in April 2021 in Cyprus. The suite consists of an original composition, polyphonic song improvisations as well as traditional tunes.
