Murder suspect remanded for eight days

Limassol district court

A 33-year-old man was remanded for eight days on Tuesday on suspicion of running over and killing another man in Limassol.

The suspect denied any involvement with the incident and said he was not at the scene where 58-year-old Christos Siakos died the previous day.

Police told Limassol district court that the suspect appears to have met Siakos and his son, 28, just before 6am on Monday between the villages of Moni and Monagroulli.

The two younger men started fighting, at which point Siakos tried to intervene. But the 33-year-old man managed to steal some cash from the 28-year-old before getting into his car. He then drove into the father, who was on foot, resulting in his fatal injury.

The suspect, who lives in Larnaca, fled the scene but was found a few hours later.

Police spokesman Lefteris Kyriakou said the three, who are all Greek Cypriots, had financial differences. Media reports suggested the two met the suspect to buy drugs.

The 33-year-old faces charges of premeditated murder and theft.
