More parking available in Nicosia’s congested old city

The Nicosia municipality on Thursday announced the opening of four new parking areas in the old part of the city offering 114 new places.

Acting Nicosia district officer Andreas Hadjipakkos inaugurated the four new parking lots.

“The creation of new parking lots in the historic centre of Nicosia is part of the general effort to revitalise and revive the city within the walls,” the municipality said.

It added that it also aims to encourage more visitors to the area and facilitate visitors and residents of the old town.

The four new parking spaces are located:

On the junction of Trikoupis and Liasidou streets – 54 parking places including five for disabled persons.

On Tikoupis street (west side) – 15 parking spaces including two for disabled persons.

On Trikoupis street (east side) – nine parking places.

On Tempon street (expansion of the existing parking lot with the addition of 36 places including three for disabled persons).

The total cost of the four new parking lots was around €370,000, the municipality said.

Nicosia mayor Constantinos Yiorkadjis said lack of parking areas was a problem for visitors and old city residents alike.

He said these projects were important because they are linked with all the others that have been carried out or are underway in the old part of the town aimed at revitalising the area.

“Serving the needs of our residents and visitors to Nicosia is a top priority,” Yiorakdis said.

He added that they will continue efforts to revitalise the part of the town within the walls and create the necessary infrastructure and conditions to attract investments in a bid to convince interested parties that the area has potential.
