Upcoming art exhibition from recycled steel

l 49

New art is coming to town! Well, almost as Cypriot artist Stavros Loizou Paou’s new exhibition is opening this October. Held at Apocalypse Gallery in Nicosia and titled Steel is Sometimes Very Soft, Paou’s exhibition recycles material to create new objects and new meanings. He transforms abandoned steel into pieces of art.

l 209“Through his creations,” say organisers, “Paou aims to display the gratitude that modern man must express to the previous generations, as it is thanks to them that one has the opportunity to enjoy a favourable life. Simultaneously, the artist highlights his concerns and worries on the ‘deterioration’ of man and nature alike, in order to raise his concerns on humanity’s ‘insatiable’ nature.

“The artist’s need to recycle, and by extension upcycle, objects whose life cycle has completed, forms his own intrinsic little world. As such, the artist goes beyond the normative views of art and demonstrates an alternative perspective of further art, in his view, all things can be understood as art. Thus, all things can continue in this manner to exist, to be adorned and to help us reflect.”

Displayed in his exhibition in mid-October are sculptures made of steel with colourful heads created from recycled material and long grey faces with a crown of flowers, among other creations. Opening the exhibition on Friday, October 15 at 7.30 pm will be the General Secretary of the Green Party Charalambos Theopemptou.
