180 fines, 89 for speeding in Paphos over weekend

Paphos traffic police issued 180 fines and confiscated one vehicle over the weekend, as part of a targeted campaign to prevent traffic accidents.

Almost half of the fines, 89, concerned speeding, while eight drivers were booked for using a mobile phone while driving.

One driver was booked for not having a driving licence and eight more people were fined for not having insurance.

Three drivers were booked for failing to wear a safety seatbelt as well as one motorcyclist who failed to wear a helmet.

Three people who were found driving under the influence of drugs, and one drunk driver were also booked.

Officers also fined three people who parked in disabled-designated parking spots.

There were an additional 62 fines for other traffic violations, police said.

During the same period, five collisions occurred in the district, including one that resulted in the serious injury of one person. Two more people were slightly injured in a separate accident, while the three other collisions resulted only in material damage.

Police said they will continue the campaigns to prevent traffic accidents.
