A 30-year-old man was remanded for eight days on suspicion of people smuggling.

The man was arrested after a boat with irregular migrants that he was in, arrived in Paralimni around 1.30am on Sunday. He appeared in court on Monday which ordered him held in police custody to facilitate the investigations.

The boat was spotted off Konnos beach in Protaras and was escorted by a marine police vessel to the Paralimni fishing shelter.

Eleven men were on board, police said, but did not provide information on their nationality.

They were taken to the Pournara centre for irregular migrants in Kokkinotrimithia.

Police said the suspect is under investigation for assisting the illegal entry of third country nationals in Cyprus, assisting third country persons with intent and for profit, and dangerous transportation of people by boat.
