Human resources are the National Guard’s most crucial asset, Defence Minister Charalambos Petrides said on Friday, speaking as he awarded green berets to this year’s recruits who have completed their special forces training.

Petrides congratulated the soldiers, saying he was certain they are “immeasurably moved and proud of themselves, having managed to stand out after the physically and mentally exhausting challenges of their training”, and the expectations they set when they decided to join the special forces.

“Very few have reached the end of this difficult journey, and you can be rightfully proud to be serving the homeland through the ranks of the legendary commandos”.

The minister also extended his congratulations to the soldiers’ parents for raising them with the principles that led them to their current position, in addition to the commanding officers who conducted the training for offering their professional guidance.

With Turkey’s illegal actions against Cyprus escalating, it is imperative that we remain vigilant and maintain our positions in accordance with international law, towards a peaceful, safe and stable solution to our national issue, Petrides said.

“The National Guard is dependent on you,” he added, because “human resources are at the heart of our armed forces, and the most crucial factor in their success

He urged the soldiers to continue with the same zeal and selflessness to honour the green beret, and face every challenge while keeping in mind the motto of the special forces: ‘Who dares wins’.
