Volunteer doctors, nurses head to Ukraine-Romania border

A group of Cypriot doctors and nurses will be traveling to the border between Ukraine and Romania on Monday night to provide medical assistance to refugees fleeing Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Dr. Georgios Makriyiannis will be heading the team, which consists of one pathologist, two pediatricians, two nurses and one auxiliary general practitioner.

“We are all part of a group called ‘Volunteer Doctors of Cyprus’, Makriyiannis told the Cyprus Mail. “We will be leaving at midnight on Monday for the Romanian town of Siret, which is approximately 11 kilometres from Ukraine.

“We will then set up a mobile clinic there for Ukrainian refugees and return to Cyprus on April 4.”

Makriyiannis also added that the group is currently planning two more missions at a later date in Moldova, where cardiologists will also be part of the team, and in Poland.

“Once a ceasefire of the conflict will be established, we will also enter Ukrainian territory and offer our services there,” he said.

According to various reports, since the outbreak of war in Ukraine, 63,000 people have arrived in Siret, a small town of only 8,000 inhabitants.
