The Animal Party said on Monday it has launched a campaign calling on people not to buy pets but choose to adopt animals from shelters.

The party’s comments fall on World Stray and Abandoned Animals Day, a worldwide awareness day to highlight the plight of homeless and abandoned animals.

“Yet again, we feel the need to address the issue of abandoned pets as we have done many other times without seeing any result,” the Animal Party said in a statement.

“Every day we witness how animals are mistreated and abused. Even the war in Ukraine provides us with examples, as thousands of pets and working animals are dying and only a few brave people find the courage and the patience to save them.

“If we do not learn to respect nature and other species, then we have no hope as a species ourselves.”

The party also criticised the state for creating more temporary shelters under the impression that they will solve the issue.

“Once again, we urge people not to buy pets, but to adopt instead and save lives,” the party said.

“We will not stop until shelters are empty.”
