Pop-up market celebrates the arrival of summer

Local handmade art and groovy summer vibes will feature at a pop-up market in Nicosia. Art stalls with all kinds of made-in-Cyprus items by local creatives will fill the charming Yfantourgeio the Workplace thanks to the two-day market that the Instagram account @handmade.in.cyprus is organising in collaboration with the venue.

On June 4 and 5, from 11am to 8pm, artists will showcase their work ranging from candles, ceramics, dolls, embroidery and resin creations to photography prints, jewellery and more. Their common trait is that all of the art is created by hand in Cyprus, an obvious prerequisite to be part of the @handmade.in.cyprus markets.

The Instagram account, run by Luzdary Hammad Stavrou, features local handmade artists and promotes their work through posts and actions aimed at connecting artists to clients but also to build a community that looks to buying local first.

“I am so excited to be hosting my second market,” Luzdary told Cyprus Mail, “especially in Nicosia, which is my hometown. It will be different from the Christmas market I hosted in Limassol mostly because Yfantourgeio The Workplace has the capability of offering drinks, snacks and has a seating area, so this market will have more of a social aspect to it. For the Christmas market, we weren’t allowed to have food and drinks due to the Covid measures.

“Another difference,” she added, “is I’ve decided to include second-hand and vintage clothes vendors this time. I am a big supporter of buying second hand and reusing, so I wanted to give attendees the chance to see what great quality and budget-friendly second-hand clothes are out there.”

And so, the weekend of June 4 and 5 will be filled with local, handmade creations, drinks, music and snacks, all in the spirit of supporting Cyprus-based creators and small businesses. A large variety of artists are taking part, some on both days of the market, others on just one so there will be lots to explore.

“The ‘Hello Summer’ Pop Up Market will be the perfect way to welcome the summer season. Firstly, it is a great opportunity to get together. Secondly, it’s a chance to meet talented local artists in person and getting to see and touch their products first-hand instead of relying on their online presence. Lastly,” she concluded, “as the main theme for the market is ‘Hello Summer’ artists are bringing their summer-themed items whether that be accessories or home décor to get us all ready for the long-awaited summer holidays!”
