A 35-year-old motorcycle driver from Paralimni died early on Thursday after sustaining serious injuries following a road accident a few hours earlier.

Giorgos Koronides was riding a motorbike which was involved in a collision with a car driven by a 36-year-old woman on Korai Street in Paralimni at around 7.45pm on Wednesday.

Famagusta district police spokesman Steve Theodoulou told the Cyprus News Agency that the woman attempted a right turn to her home and collided with the motorbike which was coming in the opposite direction.

The victim, who was wearing a protective helmet, sustained very serious injuries when he hit the asphalt following the collision and was immediately rushed to Famagusta General Hospital.

He was then transported to Nicosia General Hospital, where he was intubated, but doctors could not save his life and he was pronounced dead early on Thursday morning.

“As a result of the collision the motorbike was cut in two and the back section collided with a car that was behind the vehicle driven by the 36-year-old,” Theodoulou said.

An initial breathalyser test carried out on the woman driver came back negative.

Police investigations continue.
