Arrest in Bases after man attempts to import cannabis

Bases police said on Monday they have arrested a 31-year-old man who attempted to import 125g of cannabis via the post, who is now facing a prison sentence.

A sting operation was set up in cooperation with police from the Republic, with the latter relaying information that a suspicious package had arrived at the Trachoni post office.

On July 12, the suspect requested the package from members of staff at the post office who, unbeknown to him, turned out to be undercover SBA police officers.

After the suspect took the package he was immediately arrested – soon after, confessing to importing the drugs himself – and now faces a court appearance in September.

Chief inspector Panicos Panayi said that the arrest sends out a clear warning.

“The SBA police shows zero tolerance to drugs,” he said, adding that all our activities with the local communities and our partners in the [Republic] police aim to reduce the harm of drugs within our small island.
