A 57-year-old man has died after being found unconscious near a Limassol beach, police said on Wednesday.

According to the police report, Michalakis Kleanthous was spotted around 5pm floating on his front, about 40 metres from the coast in front of Kyrenia Sailing Club in Moutayiaka, Limassol.

He was given first aid, while an ambulance was called, but the 57-year-old could not be resuscitated.

He was taken to Limassol general hospital where doctors confirmed his death.

An autopsy will be performed on Thursday in Nicosia to establish whether his death was due to drowning or pathological causes.
