The arrival of irregular migrants in Kato Pyrgos is a frequent phenomenon, said the community leader Nikos Kleanthous on Tuesday after 29 migrants arrived in the village.

The group of irregular migrants, which included two minors arrived in the early morning hours on foot from Limitis at the coastal area in Kato Pyrgos Tyllirias, according to Cyprus Mail sources.

The community leader of the village confirmed to the Cyprus News Agency that the migrants were seen by locals walking in the area at around 2.30am.

He said they came through the occupied areas where they arrived via boat.

Police, who refused to give a statement, were called at the scene and transported them to Pournara reception centre for asylum seekers in Kokkinotrimithia.

“The whole area is concerned with the constant arrival of illegal immigrants that has become a frequent phenomenon,” Kleanthous said, calling on authorities to intervene and prevent migrant arrivals.

“It is a problem and ways must be found to solve either by guarding the coast or patrolling the port police,” the community leader said.
