Christofias’ son condemns destruction of new street sign

The son of the late former president Demetris Christofias on Monday condemned the destruction of the new street signs bearing the name of his deceased father in Geri.

Demetris Christofias’ new street name sign was destroyed a few days after the renaming ceremony.

“Dead they fear us even more,” Akel MP Christos Christofias wrote on Facebook, posting photos of the destroyed street sign.

“How much hatred, how much intolerance, how much fascism? The answer lies in our struggles. Let the darkness become light,” the politician added.

Last week, vandals defaced one of signs less than 24 hours after it was put up. On Monday, photos on social media showed another sign was uprooted from its location.

The street in question had just been renamed from ‘Geri Avenue’ to ‘Demetris Christofias Avenue’.

The decision had been taken by Geri municipality back in July “as a sign of appreciation and respect for a man whose life was dedicated to the struggle of Cyprus” the municipality said.

Between the renaming ceremony which took place on the evening of Wednesday, December 28, and Thursday morning, vandals painted over the sign.

Christofias had served as president for one term, from 2008 to 2013. He passed away in June 2019, following a month-long battle with respiratory problems.
