Unknown remain the causes of a fire that broke out on the third floor of Giorkio Residence in the early morning hours on Sunday, according to fire service spokesman Andreas Kettis.

The fire broke out a few minutes after midnight in the abandoned part of the Nicosia building, located next to the health ministry’s premises, Kettis said in a tweet.

It damaged a large part of the third floor and destroyed doors, papers and other building materials which were piled up there.

No injuries were reported after firefighters conducted a search at the premises where young people but also homeless frequent according to police sources.

Following investigation to determine what started the fire, carried out in collaboration with the police, “the cause of the fire remains unknown”, Kettis said.

Three fire engines had responded to extinguish the blaze.
