Voters in north gave Kilicdaroglu their backing

Although the race for a president in Turkey has gone to a second round, Kemal Kilicdaroglu got the backing of voters in the north of Cyprus on Sunday.

Among Turkish citizens voting in the north, Kilicdaroglu secured 54.16 per cent of the vote compared to 38.55 per cent obtained by Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

However, according to Turkish media reports, not all votes cast from abroad have been officially counted.

Voting in the north began on April 27 and finished on May 9.

A total of 140,111 people had the right to vote in the north, of whom 82,587 cast their ballots during the 13-day voting period, resulting in a turnout rate of 58.9 per cent.

In the 2018 presidential and parliamentary elections in Turkey, 42,818 people out of 106,446 eligible voters cast their vote in the north, registering a turnout of 40.22 per cent.

According to Turkish Cypriot media reports, the north registered the highest increase in voter turnout among places from where Turkish citizens abroad voted.
