London Olympic silver medallist Pavlos Kontides of Cyprus has won the gold in this year’s Sailing World Championship in Melbourne, Australia.
Kontides began the week well, and continued his good run throughout the competition finishing strongly on Sunday.
“I had a nice first day of racing with a great start to boost my confidence. I enjoyed the weather conditions in Australia, a little colder than expected, but the winds treated us well and I am very proud to return to Cyprus with a gold medal,” said the Cypriot.
“I have been working hard following the Olympic Games and it makes be very happy that I managed to finish first in the Sailing World Championship to end 2016 on a high. The support over the past few weeks has been phenomenal, and I want to say thank you to everybody who is sending in messages and giving me wishes.”
