Keeping with tradition, the Paphos Aphrodite Festival will stay true to its promise to dazzle opera lovers with its 19th edition this year, which will be offering a unique audio-visual extravagance to highlight the beauty of the mediaeval castle once more.
This year’s performance will be of W. A. Mozart’s popular opera Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail (The Abduction from the Seraglio). Mozart’s comedy will come to life on September 1,2 and 3, under the signature of established artists of opera, in co-production with the Italian agency Parma Opera Organization C.E.F.A.C. and the participation of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra.
The director of the opera is Leigh Holman, a renowned stage director in the fields of opera and musical theatre, who says that with this comedy Mozart lifts us up and reminds us to laugh, to feel deeply, to keep our vows and to cherish tolerance.
Through an act of compassion by the Turkish Pasha Selim in the opera, but also through the celebration of Eastern art and Mozart’s bringing together of western and Turkish music (even if it’s mostly his own imagined version of Turkish music), we experience the Enlightenment that Emperor Joseph II was hailing when he commissioned the work.
The plot concerns the attempts of the hero Belmonte, assisted by his servant Pedrillo, to rescue his beloved Konstanze from the seraglio of Pasha Selim. The work premiered on 16 July 1782, when Mozart was 25 years old, at the Vienna Burgtheater, with the composer conducting. Audiences were instantly delighted and the opera received superb reviews for its music, comedic effect and vocal demands.
