A minute with

A minute with… Penny Douglas Penny, the Magic Lady (maker & importer of magic tricks & children’s parties’ entertainer)

Where do you live?
Parekklisia, with a permanent lodger (the cat) & my partner at weekends

Best childhood memory?
Skiing & swimming in an outdoor pool on the same day in the Andes

Most frequented restaurant and absolute favourite dish?
Vouniotiko’, Vouni. Scrambled eggs with spinach & mushrooms, as ‘Yiayia’ makes it.

What food would you really turn your nose up to?
Being a vegetarian, I’d never eat animal flesh.

What did you have for breakfast?
Seasonal fruit, Brazil nuts, fresh fruit juice & coffee.

Would you class yourself as a day or night person? What’s your idea of the perfect night/day out?
Both a day & night person (life’s too short as it is). Perfect night out: romantic concert at Curium amphitheatre with my partner, followed by one of his stir-fries & Papaphilipou pistachio ice-cream.

Best book ever read?
Winnie the Pooh, by A.A Milne … the endearing characters .

Favourite film of all time?
The Killing. A superb Danish series for TV. Twenty hours of twisting & turning, with fallible investigators with all their foibles,

Best holiday ever taken? What’s your dream trip?
Best holiday taken: a ‘self-development’ holiday on the island of Skyros, Greece. It transformed me and my life. Dream trip: I’ll see what comes up…

What music are you listening to in the car at the moment?
Simon & Garfunkel and The Buena Vista Social Club

What is always in your fridge?
Yoghurt, seasonal fruit & veg, roasted seeds, Kambucho, chilled soup, garlic marinated in honey (for sore throats).

Dream house: rural retreat or urban dwelling? Where would it be, what would it be like?
Wooden, ‘verandered’ house, set amid trees, with my own studio for my magic manufacturing. Situated on a small cliff over my own private beach (and maybe my own small sailing boat moored there) It’d have all the latest energy-saving devices and recycling systems…. and a discreet ‘someone’ to look after them and the boat!

If you could pick anyone at all (alive or dead) to go out for the evening with, who would it be?
Darren Brown – a superb illusionist.

If the world is ending in 24 hours what would you do?
Spend it with my partner in the most beautiful spot I know (I won’t say were). It’d include a Papaphilipou ice-cream & one of his stir-fries.

What is your greatest fear?
Losing my magic-making and loosing my mind.

Tell me a joke…
Not a joke, but some quotes from small children: “Women do the washing and cleaning and men go on trains and get tired”, “You have to love your own baby because everyone else finds them a nuisance”, “I think God’s silly because he should have painted everyone the same colour & then they wouldn’t fight”
