President arrives in Vatican city

President Nicos Anastasiades arrived on Friday in the Vatican, where he is expected to meet with Pope Francis on Saturday.

The president leads a delegation consisting of Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides, Commerce, Industry, Tourism and Energy Minister Giorgos Lakkotripis, Government Spokesman Christos Stylianides and a number of ministry officials. The president is also escorted by his wife, Andri.

Following the meeting with the president, Pope Francis will also sit down with members of the delegation, according to press release sent by the palace.

The president will also be meeting Cardinal Pietro Parolin, Secretary of State of the Vatican and Dominique Mamberti, Secretary for Relations with States.

Pope Francis is the 266th Pope and he was elected on March 13 2013, succeeding Pope Benedict who stepped down on February 11, of the same year.

Former president Demetris Christofias visited the Vatican in March 2010, while Pope Benedict came to Cyprus in June 2010 for a three-day visit.
