Bar review: Let Them Eat Cake, Paphos

By Bejay Browne

I visited Let Them Eat Cake in Paphos for the first time a few days ago and wasn’t disappointed. I would highly recommend finding some spare time for a visit – with plenty of room in your stomach.

The name is misleading, as this venue is so much more than a cake shop, although, if cakes are your weakness, you’ll be in heaven. A café style menu is available 12-4pm and 7-11pm.

The staff are lovely, friendly and welcoming and the cakes are ‘moorishly’ delicious. Tables and chairs and a few comfortable sofas are found in the main room, along with a bookshelf crammed with an interesting choice of books in both Greek and English. There are board games too and an array of art work lines the walls, as this venue doubles up as a gallery.

The cakes are superb and freshly made and according to the staff often change, although the most popular are usually available. All of the food is homemade – currently the most popular dish is ‘The Burger’ for €9.50.

A visit here makes a welcome change from the usual tourist offerings, and is one of a number of venues springing up in the town which are committed to offering something different. Let Them

Eat Cake, set in the old town, offers value for money, relaxed and comfortable surroundings and a great outdoor space at the back.

The venue has been wonderfully restored and modernised by the current owner, having previously been a taverna. It took more than one year to renovate and opened in July 2013. Since then, it has been steadily gaining reputation for consistently good food and service and a welcoming ambience.

Maria Antoinette appears in various guises on walls and glass, as well as the phrase ‘let them eat cake’ in a variety of languages, a phase she allegedly uttered when informed that citizens of France had no bread to eat.

A stunning exterior area to the rear of the café is being tidied and prepared for the warmer months and should be ready by the end of the March.

Apart from being a cake-lover’s heaven (try the Blondies and the Lime and coconut Cheesecake), this venue serves other dishes, high tea coffee, wines, beers and cocktails. The strawberry mojitos are delicious too.

If you can’t find the time to visit, you’ll be missing out on a highly pleasurable experience.
