Burglar allegedly caught red-handed by Limassol police

A 40-year-old man was arrested on Thursday in Limassol after he was allegedly caught red-handed during a burglary, said police who also found drugs in his possession, they said.

At about 11:15pm, an off-duty police officer was informed by a friend that a flat was broken into and it was possible the suspect was still at the scene.

After calling for back-up, the off-duty officer went to the scene with his colleagues and apprehended the suspect as he tried to flee.

Police said he was found to have what they believed to be cannabis on his person and also a quantity of a white crystal substance, plus a pocket knife. He was also found in possession of three cufflinks and a gold lighter believed stolen from the apartment.

One resident of the flat found a bag on his balcony that contained break-in tools, an electronic tablet, four mobile phones, a camera, a car key and a cigar cutter, police said.

The bag also contained a passport that belongs to a 20-year-old man from Palestine who police believe might be a co-conspirator in the case, and have issued an arrest warrant.
