Two arrested for sham marriage

Two people, a 24-year-old Romanian woman and a 21-year-old man from Pakistan, were arrested at Larnaca airport on Sunday evening on suspicion of being involved in a sham marriage.

The Romanian was detained after arriving on a flight from Bucharest because she is wanted as a prosecution witness in a case of a sham marriage already under investigation by Aradippou police.

During a preliminary investigation at the airport she herself admitted to a sham marriage, saying she was married at the Aradippou municipality to a man from Pakistan who lives in Cyprus.

Her husband, 21, was subsequently arrested when he was looking for her at Larnaca airport.

When the two of them were further questioned after their arrest the woman repeated her statement while the man made several allegations which are being looked into by police.

They are expected to appear before Larnaca court on Monday.
