Pair rob good Samaritan

Limassol police said Friday they had arrested a man, who, together with woman, robbed an elderly lady who was preparing food for them, after they went to her home saying they were hungry.

“A 39-year-old was arrested last night for theft from a residence. The theft of jewellery was reported yesterday (Thursday) by a 72-year-old Limassol resident who appears to have fallen victim to the perpetrators, as well as her own kindness,” a police statement said.

The 72-year-old told police that, at about 3pm on Thursday, a man and woman knocked on her door claiming they were hungry.

Police say the pensioner offered to help the strangers, leaving them in her living room while she went to the kitchen to prepare some food for them.

A few minutes later, while the she was still busy getting the meal ready, the two informed her that they no longer wanted to eat, before leaving her house.

“Subsequently, the complainant found that a watch and various pieces of jewellery (bracelets, necklaces and rings) with a total value of €1,020 had been stolen from the lounge.”

Police said they found jewellery in the suspect’s possession, along with €95 in cash.

The woman went to Limassol CID where she identified the suspect, and a ring that was stolen from the house, police said.

Police said a search of the suspect’s vehicle, five rings and a cross were discovered in a bag.

The man in was later remanded in custody for six days by Limassol court.
