Ceremony to mark value of Unficyp

In the 53 years the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (Unficyp) has been deployed on the island 186 members lost their lives, Commander Mohammad Humayun Kabir said on Monday on the occasion of the International Day of Peacekeepers.

In a message read out at a ceremony held at Unificyp headquarters in the buffer zone UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres stressed the peacekeeping budget is money well spent while UN special representative, Elizabeth Spehar, said that Unficyp’s work “has never been more important than it is today”.

More than 3,500 peacekeepers have lost their lives serving around the world. Last year, 117 peacekeepers died. So far in 2017, 12 peacekeepers have been killed.
