World Cancer Day is just around the corner and as the disease continues to affect thousands worldwide, a series of events will take place around the island to raise awareness. Various charity organisations are involved in the events which run through the month of February.
NGOs, the Anti-cancer Society, PASYKAF, Europa Donna Cyprus, Europa Uomo Cyprus, Karaiskakio Foundation, Christina A. Apostolou Foundation, One Dream one wish Foundation, Goal in Life, The Cyprus Dietetic & Nutrition Association, the Cyprus Medical Students’ Association and finally the Bank of Cyprus Oncology Center as a coordinator come together with a question to the public: What can you do for a world without cancer?
This year’s World Cancer Day on Monday, February 4, is dedicated to the actions people can take to learn more about cancer prevention and treatment and choosing a healthy way of life.
As part of the campaign, events will be held in all cities to raise awareness on cancer issues. The events kick off on Saturday at Nicosia Mall and Ermou Square in Nicosia. A friendly football match between APOEL and Pafos FC will also take place that afternoon at GSP Stadium, dedicated to the campaign.
In all cities during the events, medical and nursing students will take blood pressure, sugar and cholesterol measurements for free, and diet and nutrition students will do free somatometric measurements along with educational food games.
Officials from the Tobacco Cessation Program of the Ministry of Health and from PASYKAF will take carbon monoxide (CO) measurements, while collecting samples (using saliva) to register new bone marrow donors. Children’s activities will also be on with painting and games on healthy eating with free fruit donations by AlphaMega supermarkets.
