900 new trees being planted in the capital

Nicosia Municipality is promising a greener city with 900 mature trees being planted in central avenues and quieter neighbourhoods.

Already, 270 trees have been planted following a revamp of Stasicratous, Mnasiadou, Zenas Kanther and Theophanis Theodotou streets. Another 300 will be planted once work underway on central Makarios Avenue is completed.

And as from Monday, crews have been planting mature trees along Kyriakou Matsi Avenue the last section of which was opened to traffic. The municipality said that in addition to the 90 trees, there will be bushes and climbing plants.

Tree planting has also started along Kallipoleos Avenue where 230 mature trees will bring shade to the area.

The municipality said that an agreement has been in place for several years with government and other services regarding the type of trees to be planted on new road projects so as to avoid the roots damaging public utilities and pavement.

“This is what the Municipality has done for Stasicratous, Mnasiadou, Zena Kanther and Theophani Theodorous streets, on Kallipoleos and Kyriakou Matsi. This is what it is also doing in Nicosia neighbourhoods where pavements and drainage ditches are being built, in parks and green areas,” it said.

Overall, since 2015 and once all the current projects underway are completed, a total of 5000 mature trees will have been planted in the town as part of the municipality’s drive to enhance green areas and help tackle climate change, it added.
