Get a taste for whiskey, even online

Every January well-liked Nicosia beer and burger joint Moondog’s Bar & Grill organises the Nicosia Whiskey Experience, bringing dozens of select whiskeys for enthusiasts to taste. It is usually a whole day extravaganza, sometimes even an entire weekend of savouring whiskey aromas and attending masterclasses. This year even a lockdown couldn’t stop the guys at Moondog’s as they are taking the 2021 edition online, streaming live from their Facebook page and sending whiskey samples to all those who want to be part of it.

The initiative started in 2019 where over 100 premium single malt whiskeys, blends, bourbon, isle and Speyside labels were served, with food pairings and classes over the course of two days. Six classes took place with industry professionals and experts. For the second edition in 2020 the Experience upgraded to a Whiskey & Rum event with 180 labels to taste, as well as cognac and eight masterclasses.

This year’s event will, of course, be slightly different yet the Moondog’s team is just a few days away from hosting its first-ever Virtual Whiskey Experience and whiskey lovers can participate. Though the event is happening online, you can pre-order the 13 miniature whiskey samples from beershopcy.com and follow the Cyprus Whisky Association and guest Pavlos Koumbaros in tasting them, along with an information booklet.

The organisers also suggest some possible food pairings that complement the tasting: nuts, milk chocolate, vanilla cookies, parmesan cheese, Edam cheese, Cypriot sausage, crunchy bacon, pears and oranges. The Experience will begin at 8pm, transmitted live from Moondog’s Facebook page (@moondogscy) on Friday.
