Engaging with art at Leventis Gallery

Leventis Gallery

It’s what the A.G. Leventis Gallery always aims to do, engage people with art, and they have continued on the journey since even during lockdown. On February 8 museums finally re-open and the A.G. Leventis Gallery is bringing another eventful month, whether in-person on online.

For the majority of the month, and until measures ease and events can take place, the Gallery has planned a digital agenda to entertain art enthusiasts, children and anyone who wants to get in touch with art in alternative ways. On Saturday they invite old and young on a journey filled with creativity and learning through the works of the Gallery.

How did impressionism get its name? Who were the Fauvists? What inspired Adamantios Diamantis to paint The World of Cyprus?. Why does Oudry paint a fly in his work? Does the cat end up eating the asparagus? These are all questions and fun antics the digital programme will look at. Museum educators, through a series of mini videos, will introduce audiences to characters, artists and fun facts found in the works of the A.G. Leventis Gallery.

Suitable for anyone aged eight and above, you can tune in on the Gallery’s social media pages (Facebook, Instagram and YouTube) and watch the videos. The video published at 12pm will be in English and the one posted at 11am will be in Greek.

On Valentine’s Day, the Gallery’s museum educators have another special event for children from as young as two. Storytime at the A.G. Leventis Gallery will host educators pairing beloved stories with the masterpieces of the Gallery. “Together we will read and use our creativity for unique arts and crafts,” they say. “All you have to do is press play and join us on a magical journey filled with art and stories!” To participate, watch the video on February 14 at 12pm for an English narration and the video at 11am for a Greek one.

Towards the end of the month, an online seminar will take place at the Gallery titled Move Freely in the Museum. The seminar looks at how a museum can creatively engage children and teens. Could it offer space for exploration through the body and movement?

Using the paintings of the A.G. Leventis Gallery, choreographer and dance instructor Maria Kamberies, who is also the speaker of the seminars, aims to cultivate the way children and teenagers view a museum. At the same time, the young participants will explore methods of approach that could encourage this group to actively participate and view the museum as a place of interest.

The Gallery will conclude the month’s events with a mindful activity; a meditation with art! On February 28 they invite audiences to take a deep breath and let Stefanos Lanza’s painting Column of the Temple of Olympian Zeus from the Greek Collection of the A.G. Leventis Gallery to transport them to a place “where the power and light of our soul can create a whole new reality for us; just how we imagined it.” The premise remains the same, tune in online at 4pm and let mind and body relax with art.
