Norway Grants are supporting the Karaiskakio’s children’s cancer centre, the foundation said on Friday.

In light of the international childhood cancer day on Monday, Karaiskakio foundation summarised the actions taken in Cyprus for the support of children with cancer.

Part of the actions was the creation of the children’s cancer centre, “a complete laboratory research and diagnostic unit for paediatric oncology” which provides high-quality specialised services to children with cancer.

The centre was co-founded by the Norway Grants, Opap, the association One Dream One Wish and the Rotary clubs, Karaiskakio said.

“This is a project of great importance, aimed at supporting the further development of paediatric oncology in Cyprus and promoting targeted treatment options, to reduce the side effects of conventional treatments received by children suffering from leukaemia and other type of cancers,” the foundation said.

Norway is part of the European internal market under the EEA Agreement, signed in 2019, and contributes to strengthen cooperation between European countries. An amount of €11.5 million is allocated to Cyprus.

Norway Grants have also supported the infrastructure of Karaiskakio’s bone marrow donor registry, the organisation of information campaigns and the expansion or the registry as well as the development of the international cooperation of the foundation.

Established in 1997, Karaiskakio “is now one of the best centres in the world in diagnostic haematology and a powerful scientific and research centre, now covering other areas of oncology and rare diseases, with modern infrastructure and well-trained human resources, which allows it to set even higher goals with a focus on the patient.”
