30% of Cyprus’ Olympic athletes are women

Around 30 per cent of Cyprus’ Olympic athletes are women, the Cyprus Olympians Association (Kesoa) revealed on Monday on the occasion of International Women’s Day, celebrated worldwide on March 8.

Out of 121 Olympic athletes in Cyprus, 36 are women. Furthermore, Kesoa added that two women have been elected to the association’s board of directors, Andri Sialou, who is serving as general secretary, and track and field star athlete Eleni Artymata, now a member of the board.

The association released a statement congratulating all women for the role they play not just in sports, but in society as well.

“The results achieved by women have led to their recognition in all aspects of life, with the result that gender equality has made significant progress in Cyprus,” Kesoa said.

“As far as sports are concerned, women have managed to be extremely successful in the last decade, both individually and as teams.

“Last but not least, let us not forget the role women played in the past year during the coronavirus pandemic, as they constituted the majority of health workers whose help to the general population has been invaluable.

“Given these numbers, we are confident that we will get even closer to total equality both in sports and in the everyday aspects of our lives in the near future,” Kysoa’s statement concluded.
