The mental habit that ruins our happiness

In this video, business and life coach Tatev Petrosyan compassionately confronts us with a common mental habit that so often blocks our happiness and wellbeing: not being in the present moment.

In other words: the tendency to reject what is actually unfolding for us, if it is does not match our pre-determined picture of happiness.

Conditioning and overthinking play a big role in fuelling this mental habit, keeping us from the moment-to-moment joy that might otherwise have been available.

Yet not only is the present moment ‘good enough’ for us, it actually contains everything we need to feel peaceful and in a state of ease.

At the root of discontent and unhappiness is the strong belief that “my life should have been different from what it is now” she says.

“But how do you know? Who decides?” she asks. “How do we know what our lives are supposed to be?”

“I really invite you to stay with this question,” she continues. “How do you know what’s best for us, or that the challenges we’re facing are not supposed to be the challenges that we needed to face, in order to grow, understand and appreciate our lives?”

Ultimately, gratitude is happiness, she reminds, and the more we learn how to appreciate – deeply appreciate – what is available to us, right now, the more our lives will relax into wellbeing.
