Chelsea leave it late but take over at top of the table

Timo Werner and Ben Chilwell’s late strikes sent Chelsea top of the Premier League as the Blues dispatched 10-man Southampton 3-1 at Stamford Bridge.

James Ward-Prowse scored a penalty only to be sent off for a late, lunging tackle on Jorginho, opening the door for Werner and Chilwell to send the Blues back to winning ways.

Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Everton teed up the chance for Chelsea to climb to the league’s summit, and after a testing and at times tetchy afternoon, Thomas Tuchel’s men obliged.

Trevoh Chalobah’s header had the home side in the box seat, until Chilwell upended former Chelsea academy star Tino Livramento in the box.

Ward-Prowse converted the spot-kick to threaten Chelsea’s ambitions of moving top of the pile.

Chelsea saw first-half finishes ruled out for both Romelu Lukaku and Werner, but just when the west Londoners feared paying the price, two late goals turned the tide.

Werner turned in Cesar Azpilicueta’s smart cross to spark celebrations of relief as Chelsea moved 2-1 ahead, before Chilwell atoned for conceding the penalty by lashing in the third.

Lukaku’s dlsallowed effort came when he slotted home neatly after Toni Rudiger’s fine through-ball, only to be pulled back for offside.

Werner’s chalked-off finish was when he nodded in from Callum Hudson-Odoi’s inch-perfect cross.

Referee Martin Atkinson ruled out the goal after viewing the pitchside monitors and judging Azpilicueta to have fouled Kyle Walker-Peters in the build-up.

Thomas Tuchel was then booked for his excessive touchline protests, and the Chelsea boss even ended up nose-to-nose with Atkinson as tempers threatened to boil over.

Llorente goal seals first win for Leeds
Leeds United finally got to celebrate their first Premier League win of the season as Diego Llorente’s first-half goal earned them a 1-0 win over Watford at Elland Road on Saturday.

Spanish defender Llorente was quickest to react to a loose ball in the box following a Leeds corner in the 18th minute and hooked it past Ben Foster from close range.

Watford lacked intensity and failed to test their hosts, although they thought they had an unlikely equaliser when Leeds keeper Illan Meslier fumbled a corner and the ball ended up in the net. But the goal was disallowed for a foul.

Foster was lucky to get away with an error late on when Tyler Roberts had an effort cleared off the line.

Leeds should have won by a wider margin as Mateusz Klich went close and Stuart Dallas fired a good chance wide, while Daniel James had a strong penalty appeal turned down.

With Raphinha again instrumental for Leeds, Marcelo Bielsa’s side moved up to 16th spot with six points, with Watford one point better off after seven games.

Hwang double gives Wolves 2-1 win over Newcastle
South Korean forward Hwang Hee-chan struck twice from assists by Raul Jimenez to help Wolverhampton Wanderers to a 2-1 home win over Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday as they moved clear of the relegation zone.

The result lifted Wolves up to 10th in the standings on nine points from seven games. Newcastle slipped to 19th on three points and continued their winless streak, piling the pressure on manager Steve Bruce.

Hwang, who is on loan at Wolves from Bundesliga side RB Leipzig, fired the hosts ahead in the 20th minute with a neat finish from a tight angle after Jimenez released him with a lovely through ball.

Newcastle equalised in the 41st as Jeff Hendrick, who came on five minutes earlier for the injured Joe Willock, drilled in a low shot from 30 metres across Jose Sa as the goalkeeper was left scrambling to get back to his line.

Wolves clinched it in the 58th minute after more sublime work by Jimenez, who turned two markers superbly and delivered another defence-splitting pass for Hwang to side-foot past visiting keeper Karl Darlow.

The pace dropped in the closing stages and Wolves held out comfortably as the visitors failed to trouble Sa, with their French forward Allan Saint-Maximin lacking any support up front.
