TV shows we love: Instant Home Makeover

I love a home makeover show and, roll your eyes if you will, judging by Netflix Top 10 rankings I am not alone. The latest – Instant Home Makeover – sees a crew of around 200 people renovate an entire home in 12 hours!

Yes, that’s right and it is a point frequently made by the show’s excitable, and theatrically trained, presenter Danielle. She is joined by four experts in design and construction to slam together a whole new home for eight lucky families in a series that follows a standard format.

Home owners are filmed (by a secret camera) leaving at 7am as the TV crew watch on in increasingly exuberant disguises. The whole team then runs in and starts tacking out the clutter. Cut to the warehouse where preparations have been ongoing for months before the day in question when one of the experts argues with another about how much can be pulled off in 12 hours.

Thanks to a large and very organised white board they do pull it off each time and the home owners are left sitting in a much improved property.

But first there has to be some more time in the warehouse where some hard to solve angle of quickly doing over a house has to be tested – this is really wasted time as far as the viewer is concerned because all we are interested in is the end result. It does involve some dramatic solutions though – cue the appearance of helicopters and extreme fork lifting.

And of course, there is always a last minute panic when the person (accomplice) charged with keeping the family out of the house for 12 hours just can’t do it any longer and calls Danielle to tell her the moment has arrived to hit the panic button. It always ends well (no spoiler there) and the family are left with an incredible looking new home, on which no expense seems to have been spared.

Enjoyable viewing if you are after a show that you don’t have to concentrate too hard on.
