Police arrest man wanted for thefts from optical shops

Police on Thursday arrested a 54-year-old man, in connection with investigated cases of shoplifting, burglary, theft and bodily harm, committed in Paphos last Sunday and prior.

According to the police, around 4.50am the alarm system of an optical shop in Paphos went off. Relatives of the owner rushed to the store and found a suspicious person outside. During their attempt to immobilise him the suspect pulled out a knife and attacked them, injuring a 27-year-old on his right hand, before fleeing.

Police examined the scene and established that the shop had been broken into and around 100 pairs of glasses, valued at €9,000 were stolen.

Police subsequently found 38 pairs of the stolen glasses in a cardboard box at a location in the vicinity of the shop.

In the course of investigation, police obtained evidence against a 54-year-old man and a judicial arrest warrant was issued against him.

Police located and arrested the suspect on Thursday, shortly after midnight, in the Paphos district.

A second case of burglary of yet another optical shop, committed ten days ago, is being investigated against the suspect. A number of glasses were stolen from the store. He was arrested on a warrant for burglary and theft.
