The calisthenics park at Larnaca’s Kastella Beach

Cyprus’ largest and most comprehensive calisthenics park has been installed at Larnaca’s  Kastella Beach, it emerged on Friday.

The park in a joint project between the city’s municipality and the Larnaca Tourism Board (LTB).

The beach fitness apparatus – comprised exclusively of calisthenics equipment – is designed for use by both children and adults with the parallel aim of holding athletic events and competitions.

The creation of the park falls under LTB’s Annual Action Plan that is under the purview of the deputy ministry of tourism and contributes to Larnaca city’s enrichment initiatives.

The equipment, manufactured in accordance with European Quality and Safety Regulations, includes pull-up bars, parallel bars, ladders, benches, rings, and other apparatus of varying heights. In addition to meeting the requirements of adults, equipment suitable for children has also been installed.

Calisthenics, an increasingly popular way of training that is fast gaining fans internationally, is based on the training system used by the ancient Greeks to prepare their body and spirit for battle, to take part in competitions, or simply to maintain good health and physical conditioning. The name of the sport comes from the ancient Greek words ‘kallos’ (meaning beauty) and ‘sthenos’ (meaning vigour; both mental and physical).

In preparing the proposal, the expertise and know-how of professionals with experience in creating similar spaces and parks abroad was utilised. Kastella Beach was chosen as the ideal location due to its easy accessibility, connection to public transport and cycle paths, ample parking, access to sanitary facilities, and its proximity to a large number of tourist accommodations and new residential units.
