Nude scenes as controversial work kicks off Thoc agenda

cleansed

A new play presented by the Cyprus Theatre Organisation begins its series of shows this January and invites a strictly adult audience. Cleansed is a play by English playwright Sarah Kane first presented in 1998 in London that touches on sexual desires, love, pain, torture and death. From January 19, it will take over THOK’s stage with a seven-piece cast.

Presented in Greek, the play follows the stories of six people who are subjected to torture under the sadistic gaze of a doctor. Relationships of power and submission unfold that open wounds and crush bodies and souls. Fear, distorted emotion and cries of love are presented on stage and as the play includes some violence, nude and sensual scenes, entrance to Cleansed is limited to those above 18 years old.

Kane, is considered to be one of the most controversial figures in contemporary British drama and Cleansed acts as an example of verbal cruelty, the mechanisms of oppression and control of social institutions. This adaptation in Greek, directed by Euripides Dikaios, confronts Kane’s raw universe and takes on the challenge of how to represent the unrepresentable. The play will run through February and and on March 1 will be presented to Limassol audiences at Rialto Theatre.
