Police were investigating a racist rape comment against independent MP Alexandra Attalides on Wednesday, as she called on the attorney general to take a stand on whether it was hate speech.

The user posted on X: “I think one or two Muslims should rape you so you come to your senses. What, you live in a protected area and they can’t reach you? Before you know it, you won’t know where to hide.”

The comment came under a post that Attalides shared over a widely circulated video of the fascist salute in Italy, where she raised concerns saying “fascism has returned.”

Attalides then tagged and shared the racist comment to the attorney general George Savvides.

“Because you have never seen hate speech targeted towards me, and you shelved my case, tell us your opinion over this,” she challenged.

“Is it a threat? Is it hate speech?”

Savvides then responded saying he spoke to the police chief, and the force was investigating the matter.

“I have informed Mrs Attalides who has also been briefed by the police.”

This is not the first time Attalides has been on the receiving end of racist threats, the most vociferous by her own colleague, independent MP Andreas Themistocleous.

She accused him of a racist and homophobic attack, after a Facebook post he wrote about her saying “it looks like the three blacks never showed up.”

He was referring to Attalides’ past allegations that she was receiving threatening messages, among them one saying they would “send three blacks to take care of you”.

The attorney general’s office did not find any evidence linking him to criminal offences.
